Now that I think I could do, being now educated in Physiology, which really helps.
As a grappler and a striker we want both strength and power. Strength for the grappling doing submissions like the Triangle choke, Guillatine, etc...
And power for the striking.
So focusing on these elements, we should be concentrating on movements and exercises that can achieve this.
With this in mind, lets look at some excellent movements that can achieve this.
First, let's look at some plyometric exercises. This helps with good cardiovascular conditioning, puts you in the glucose burn zone, elevating your heartrate, and adds a lot of power to the legs, as well as strength.
Some items that apply to this range, are:
- Suspended Lunge with Power
- Suspended Burpee
- Sprinters Starts with Power
- Jump roping at moderate to high speed/intensity
Now additionally, you also want to get into the fat burning zone, keep your heartrate minimally elevated and stay at a steady pace the entire time. The goal here is not to get lots of speed, but rather to stay at a slightly evelated pace allowing fat to be extracted from your cells during this time.
There are specific scientific and medical terms for all of this, but I know most people could care less as long as it gets results so I'm not going to bother. If you'd like me to explain these terms, let me know.
With that said, here are some excellent exercises that can achieve this:
- Single Leg Squat
- Bicep Curl
- Chest Press
- Back Row
- Suspended Incline Press
- Kneeling Roll Out
Ok, so now we need to cover the element of power. Now, unlike the belief of lots of people, most of the power comes from your hips, and body rotation. If you'd like to test the theory for yourself, the next time you are bag training do a hook or a jab just like normal. Then do that same punch, except the next time, rotate your hips towards the bag while you do it. Same applies to kicks, knees, and elbows respectively.
Here are some excellent examples of exercises that can build on power:
- Power Pulls
- Low Rows with Tempo
- Atomic Oblique Pushup Matrix
- Suspended Pendulum with Tempo
This is simply a brief rundown of the kind of workout you can do. But it is to the least something to start with.
Hope this helps.
Thanks,
Justin
