Using TRX for Figure Skating Core Training

I am brand new to the TRX system.  I have used the product 3 times and each time it has worked me out to the max.

My primary reason for purchasing the TRX was for my daughters who are both competitive figure skaters.  My oldest is working on her double Axel and her first triple, the Sowchow.  She gets rotated around on the jumps but feels like she is being pulled out of her jump, that she can't hold on to the jump and therefore falls on the landing.  I was wondering if anyone out there has done any research on training specifically for iceskating using the TRX.  I ordered the TRX core workout which we all will do but was looking for a focus on the sport.  TIA  Dean

     Hi Dean

Great to hear that you are enjoying your workouts so far and your daughter sounds like quite a skater. The double axel and triple Sowchow are no mean feats. As a canadian it was pretty much mandatory to spend lots of time on skates but my endeavors were limited to the comparative violence of hockey as opposed to the grace of figure skating. It sounds to me that your daughter is having a hard time declerating the rotation of the jump once she hits the ice. This rotation has to be controlled throught the entire body but two good places to start are the hip and trunk.

From the suspended lunge try to rotate both into and away from the lead leg holding the arms extended and at chest height. This will allow her to create rotational momentum. Once she can do this well you can begin to add power to the lunge so that she is airborne and then lands into the rotational reach to help further duplicate the forces of the movement. Finally you can add a medicine ball throw to this to create more rotational force for her to contol. Stand to the side of the direction she is facing and time the ball so that she is catching it from the side as her foot touches the ground.

Any of the suspended core exercises will also help and especially integrating the suspended scorpion where she suspends only a single leg, positions herself slightly in front of the neutral position and takes the free leg over the supsended leg as far as possible and then under the suspended leg as far as possible.

These exercises should really make a difference.

Thanks Fraser!  I was trying to get the youngest daughter into the more violent ice sport but she wanted to figure skate too.  She is on the synchro iceskating team.  This will be great for both of their cores.  Thanks for the help and I will give you an update.

Re: Using TRX for Figure Skating Core Training

In my experience the TRX works great for figure skaters; so long as you are addressing the sport's requirements.  I am the strength coach for a local few figure skaters.  Stability, core strength, rotational power, isometric upper body strength, low body strength, and explosive leg power can all be incorporated into TRX workouts.  I probably spend around half of their training time using the TRX.  Their TRX training has definitely had a positive impact on improving jumps and spins.  Consequently, they also love to train using the TRX!

Thanks Steve-o!  My daughter has really enjoyed the training so far.  I look forward to seeing the results of the TRX training for her.
