About Paul Knapp

Mr. Knapp was born and raised in Johnstown, Pennsylvania and attended The Pennsylvania State University where he obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Physiology and a minor in Sports Management. While attending Penn State he was a strength and conditioning assistant for the men and women’s varsity sports including football, basketball, soccer, and wrestling. In addition, he assisted the athletic department in construction and supervision of two fitness facilities and established the first Wellness Exposition for the Intramural Department, which is still active today. Outside of his fitness activities Paul is an active member in many nationally recognized organizations and holds various certifications including: The American Council on Exercise, Cooper Institute for Aerobics Research, American Red Cross, Presidents Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, and the US Navy. Paul was a personal trainer and facility supervisor for two private health clubs in State College, PA and at a community YMCA in Johnstown, PA before accepting a position with the government. Mr. Knapp was the Fitness and Wellness Specialist for the Morale, Welfare and Recreation Division, Marine Corps Base, Quantico, Virginia from March 1992 to June 1997. At Quantico, Paul was responsible for program development of the highly successful Semper Fit Program for the Marine Corps Combat Development Command. He has experience with designing and managing fitness facilities, organizing and conducting special events, and providing educational programs to active duty, retirees, DOD civilians, and their family members. Paul conducted several case studies while working with the Marine Corps ranging from body fat standards in the military to physical preparation for marksmanship. Paul then reported to the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Portsmouth, NH where he was the Fletcher Recreation Complex Manager from September 1997 to June 2000 overseeing bowling lanes, racquetball and tennis courts, weight and cardiovascular rooms, snack bar and all related programs and personnel issues for a $1.5 million complex. During this time he developed and produced the first circuit training exercise video for the Bureau of Naval Personnel. Paul, his wife Casey (CDR, USN, Ret.), and daughters Catherine and Caroline reside in Virginia Beach, VA. He is currently employed full time as a public health educator/exercise physiologist at Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek. He has been featured on Navy Marine Corps News, base newspaper, is a faculty instructor for the Center for Naval Leadership, and is a physical training advisor for all local commands including EOD, ACU 2, MUDSU 2, UCT 1 and various naval ships. Paul is the recipient of the Meritorious Civilian Service Award in 2003, and has been selected as civilian of the quarter 3 times for Boone Medical Clinic and once for Portsmouth Hospital since 2001. Paul was named Civilian of the Year for Boone Medical Clinic, 2004. Paul has more than 15 years experience in the health and fitness realm and loves to guest lecture and personal train as often as possible.
